There is nothing more powerful than faith – the kind of faith you can only find through Jesus. This faith is the faith that will overcome fear every time.
I am sure you’ve seen those “faith over fear” graphic tees many were wearing around town a few years back. I was one of them, but now this saying has so much more meaning to me.
Faith over fear is not just some quote to stand on when you feel inspired.
Faith is believing in God when everything is telling you not to. Faith is believing in the Lord’s promises when prayers have not been answered. Faith is knowing, truly knowing, that Jesus is with you as you walk through the fire that is life.
This promise often bring me to tears. The Lord’s love for us is so strong that He vows to walk through it all right by our side, creating a hedge of protection around us.
If we believe what God has spoken here, then fear cannot take root in our hearts.
Faith Over Fear: A Choice To Be Made
Both faith and fear are powerful. They have the ability to change us. This has everything to do with what we are willing to believe in.
Faith, in general, is defined as “having complete trust or confidence in someone or something.” In terms of faith in God, this is a complete trust in Him, believing in Him even when we are unable to see Him or what He is doing.
Fear, on the other hand, is an “emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.”
In my experience, fear leads to limitations and anxiety while faith allows you to live with peace and possibility.
None of us want to live in fear, but as life tests us, fear can begin to become a part of our daily life without us even realizing it at first. One worry leads to another and another, and if not addressed, fear sets in.
But Jesus says we are a new creation through our belief in Him. Through this belief, He renews our mind in a way that alters how we view ourselves, life, and any uncertainty. Fear is not a part of the Lord’s plan for our lives.
Faith Over Fear: 3 Qualities That Fight Fear
I would define the attributes Jesus places within our spirit as a fight against fear.
Power is the strength God gives us to keep going so that we can continue on in His name.
Love is the kindness and patience the Lord has shown us as an assurance that we are not alone. This love then grows within us and changes our perception bringing a sense of peace to any situation.
Sound Judgement is His word leading us to make better decisions, and, in time, giving us the wisdom needed to fight the good fight of faith.
Each of these qualities will grow in your spirit when you depend on your faith, even when you don’t think of yourself as having power, love or sound judgment.
Faith Over Fear: Do Not Be Afraid
Time and time again, you will read in scripture – do not be afraid. God does not want us to live in an anxious state about our future or our family. God wants us to walk in courage being an example to others using His guidance as a foundation to stand on.
The only way to actually do this is through faith. And in all honesty, this takes time and practice.
Faith develops over time just as fear does.
And I must note that faith in Jesus does not mean all difficulty disappears. Of course there will still be worry and questions that arise, but the key is to replace fearful thoughts with the word of God.
Pick 3 things that you fear and replace that fear with scripture today. When you feel the fear rising within, go back and remind yourself what God says.
I made a few examples of fears and what verses to declare over your life instead.
- Fear of the future
But God says: “For I know the plans I have for you” – this is the Lord’s declaration -“plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 HCSB
- Fear of worsening health
Remind yourself of God’s promise: “But I will bring you health and will heal you of your wounds – this is the Lord’s declaration …” Jeremiah 30:17 HCSB
- Fear of being alone
God says we are never without Him: “Yahweh your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will bring you quietness with His love. He will delight in you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah 3:17 HCSB
Faith Over Fear Equals Victory
God speaks of how important faith is because at the end of the day, it is our faith in Him and His guiding light that will lead us to overcome any and all situations in life.
Faith is referred to in scripture as victory.
Faith in God will always lead you away from fear and into possibility. I pray that this blog post brings about a new sense of peace as you begin to depend on your faith first.
